WET ICE '96 consisted of seven individual workshops running in parallel, each including paper presentations and working group discussions, some including panels. In addition, there were joint plenary sessions and a final communal session to summarize each groups' findings.

The workshops focused on infrastructural issues related to collaboration in diverse application domains, particularly technologies that utilize the Internet. The workshops included:
